If you ‘ditch Control4’ why would you want to keep the hardware? You can always own Composer HE to make little changes yourself to your system, and if you don’t want to make large changes in system or add-ons, then it shouldn’t be an issue. The good news is I don't think they ever get there, and are 'stuck' with a dealer channel. The dealers are a tool to get to where they want to be. So why do I say the dealers are drinking Kool-Aid? OK maybe not all of them, but most seem to believe that C4 wants a dealer exclusive brand like Crestron, AMX, Savant. and they are going up against their market control over the high tech consumer.

Maybe partially because it's kind of a rigged game with the big guys like Apple, Google, etc. That was the dream 15 years ago, but IMO, C4 got bogged down trying to please custom integrators, and lost focus on the mass market. They wanted a product for the DIY market, and if you can't handle that, go the the Geek Squad counter. Yes, BB does have the Geek Squad and Magnolia (a bridge acquisition to dabble in the custom space), however it's bread and butter is big box cash and carry sales, and they most likely did not put in $113M to create work for Geek Squad/Mag. In fact, about half the money ($113M) that launched C4 was from Best Buy Capitol. They would not have received venture cap from all the big names with a custom only market strategy. Custom integrators are a relatively small market when compared to mass market consumer electronics. But their vision was always for mass market DIY people.

This meant fully playing the game of protected pricing, dealer only sales, and a professional services ecosystem. To break into home automation back in the day, the only way was the custom integrator channel. C4's relationship w/ Best Buy should have been pretty obvious to most, but the dealers drank too much Kool-Aid, so let me explain.
